Skinny Banana Split Trifle is a delicious, figure friendly ending to any meal. This No-bake dessert could not be any easier to throw together either!
Chunks of store-bought angel food cake are smothered in a vanilla sugar-free pudding "cream" and layered with all that is good in a banana split: fresh banana slices, pineapple, fresh sliced strawberries, chocolate fudge topping and, of course, walnuts, whipped topping and cherries to finish it all off for a spectacular presentation!
I made this trifle for our Christmas day dessert. I wanted something light to finish the meal with and my mind immediately went to a popular post I did several years ago for an Easy Butterfinger Dessert. I'm not sure where the flavor inspiration for this one popped up from, but my son has been on an all out banana kick for the past few months and maybe it was buying all those bananas these days that sparked the creativity. I don't know!
At any rate, this was absolutely delicious. Like lick-the-bowl-clean delicious! I made it in a pretty trifle bowl I had gotten as a wedding present WAAAAAYYYY back in the 80's, but like the Easy Butterfinger Dessert, you could do this in two layers and make it in a 9 x 13" glass
baking dish as well. This makes a great dessert for a crowd too!
My biggest regret with this dessert was that I did not get better photos! Oh well. I can always update photos at another time, because I know I will be making this masterpiece again! Maybe I'll make it for a special occasion OR maybe I'll make it just because...because it's just so darn good and easy!
And unlike the real deal banana split, I don't have to worry about it melting!

Skinny Banana Split Trifle
Chunks of store-bought angel food cake are smothered in a vanilla sugar-free pudding "cream" and layered with all that is good in a banana split: fresh banana slices, pineapple, fresh sliced strawberries, chocolate fudge topping and, of course, walnuts, whipped topping and cherries to finish it all off for a spectacular presentation!
Ingredients
- 1 (10") prepared angel food cake, cut into 1" cubes
- 1 (1 oz.) package of sugar-free, fat-free vanilla pudding mix
- 1 1/2 cups skim or 1% milk
- 2 (8 oz.) containers of Cool Whip FREE, thawed, divided
- 3 med sized bananas, sliced
- 3/4 cup canned 100% juice packed pineapple tidbits, drained
- 3 cups sliced fresh strawberries
- 3 TBS jarred chocolate fudge sauce, (warmed to make it easier to drizzle)
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
- 5 - 6 maraschino cherries, for garnish
Instructions
- In large bowl, with a whisk, combine the pudding mix and the milk until thickened. Fold in 1 1/2 containers of Cool Whip Free. (reserve other half for topping trifle) Set aside.
- Layer 1/3 of angel food cake cubes in bottom or trifle OR 9 x 13" glass pan. (if using a 9 x 13" pan, you might have to divide everything into two layers instead of three and just make adjustments)
- On top of cake cubes, sprinkle 1/3 of the pineapple. Top the pineapple with 1/3 of the pudding mixture and spread evenly. Sprinkle one of the sliced bananas onto the pudding layer, along with 1 cup of the strawberries and a drizzle of 1 TBS of the chocolate fudge sauce. Repeat the layering one more time. To create the last layer, put the banana, pineapple and strawberries on top of the cake cubes, cover with remaining pudding mixture and then drizzle with remaining chocolate fudge sauce and sprinkle with walnuts. Add dollops of Cool Whip to the top and add cherries to the center of the dollops.
- Cover loosely (the cherries will help keep any plastic wrap from sticking to the surface) and refrigerate for at least an hour before serving.
