Cracker Barrel Copycat Country Style Green Beans

How do you flavor canned green beans?

I have long been a fan of Cracker Barrel's down home cooking style.  There are certain things I MUST have when I go there, their green beans being one of them. Soft, flavorful, green beans seasoned with smokey bacon and onions.

It's making my mouth water right now just thinking about it.  That is a pretty good sign, when a vegetable like green beans can make your mouth water! So,  when I stumbled upon a copycat recipe several weeks ago, I knew I had to give it a try.

I have to be honest with you though, I used to hate green beans as a kid.  Even as a young adult, I pushed my nose up at green beans.  I wonder if I would have been served these Cracker Barrel Style green beans, if I would have changed my mind a lot sooner?

Today, green beans are my go to vegetable of choice!  Ha!  Who would have ever guessed?

These Cracker Barrel Copycat Country Style Green Beans will turn anyone into a green bean lover.  I mean, there's bacon in them!

How can that be bad? It's the bacon, onion, and sugar that really give these canned green beans their flavor!

How do you make Cracker Barrel Green Beans?

This recipe could not be easier because you start with canned green beans.

I'm not a huge fan of canned vegetables, I prefer frozen or fresh, but the canned beans really work well in this recipe and I'm not sure the recipe would even work if it were made with frozen or fresh green beans.

This green bean recipe made a trial run at my house a few weeks ago, and was given thumbs up by everyone that tried them.  These are already on my Thanksgiving menu for this year!

If you are a fan of Cracker Barrel's country style green beans, you've got to give this recipe a try.  I know these beans will be making regular appearances around my house.

Canned green beans simmered with smokey bacon and onion until they are super tender make an awesome addition to any holiday table, weeknight dinner, or weekend feast!

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of thick cut bacon, chopped into pieces
  • 3- 14.5 ounce cans of cut green beans in water (I used Del Monte®), DO NOT DRAIN
  • 1/2 cup finely diced sweet onion
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar
  • salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. In large saucepan, add cut up bacon pieces and cook on medium heat until just browned, but not crisp. (To make cutting up bacon easier, put into freezer for several minutes before chopping).
  2. Once bacon is done, add in the green beans with their liquid, the onion, and the sugar. Stir. Bring mixture to a boil, then turn down to simmer.
  3. Allow beans to simmer on very low heat for 35-40 minutes without stirring to allow flavors to blend and the onion to cook. (stirring will cause the beans to break apart).
  4. Take off heat and add in salt and pepper to your taste and gently stir. Do not drain off liquid. Serve with a slotted spoon. Enjoy!

Notes

You can make this recipe in advance and store in the liquid in the refrigerator and then just heat them up on the big day, to save you time.

Renee's Notes: Like I mentioned, these green beans will be making an appearance on our holiday table this year.  You can make this recipe in advance and store in the liquid in the refrigerator and then just heat them up on the big day, to save you time. 7. I have had these and love their smoky bacon-y flavor. I grew up with parents who always planted a garden and I totally hated picking the green beans because I most always saw snakes. lol Mom canned her own beans and for a long time that was the only way I would eat them. Now I love her canned beans and fresh ones!

    1. There are no potatoes in the green beans Cracker Barrel serves in the restaurant. But feel free to adapt this recipe to your own liking. If you want to add potatoes, you can. Would be delicious!

    5. I have never used fresh green beans but with a little adjusting, I don't see why not. I'll have to see if I can rework the recipe a little to include fresh green beans as an option. Thanks for the question!

    6. Can you cook in a crockpot to keep hot on a buffet? Temp & time?

    7. Hello and thanks for your question. I have not tried making this recipe in a slow cooker, but I don't see why it wouldn't work. I would say LOW for 3-4 hours should work and you can hold them on WARM for a buffet. Hope this helps

  16. If I am serving this for a large gathering (100 people) how would you reheat? Oven? I’m worried stovetop might break the beans up with too much stirring.

    1. Wow! That's a big crowd. I've never made that many servings. You are correct, you will need to be very careful when stirring not to break up the beans too much. Maybe in a large chafing dish over simmering water would work best for reheating that many servings. Hope this helps.

    1. Hi! thanks for your question. I've never made this recipe in a slow cooker so I'm not sure how it would come out, but I have used a slow cooker to reheat it and keep it warm for buffet serving. Hope this helps! If you try to prepare them in a slow cooker, let me know how it turns out!
